In the 2018 South African
Cricket Annual, he was named as one of the five Cricketers of the Year. Markram
was described by former captain and batsman Graeme Smith as a future South
Africa captain.
He made his international
debut for South Africa in September 2017.
Some of his work altered the
relative timing of single pre- and post-synaptic action potentials to reveal a
learning mechanism operating between neurons where the relative timing in the
millisecond range affects the coupling strength between neurons.
The importance of such
timing has been reproduced in many brain regions and is known as spike
timing-dependent synaptic plasticity (STDP)
Markram matriculated at
Kathu High School in the Northern Cape. He made his senior provincial debut for
the Griquas in 1997 and in the 1998 season he scored 24 tries, which was a
Griquas record for most tries in a first-class season.
Markram also played for
Western Province, the Boland Cavaliers and in the Super Rugby competition, for
the Stormers.[
